Herbaceous perennial plant native to tropical Africa, whose extract is traditionally used both as a dietary supplement and topically to counteract pain and inflammation, often linked to arthritis, rheumatism, muscular pain and inflammation of ligaments and tendons.
The compounds with anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity are the iridoid glycosides, the main representative of which is harpagoside. Extracts from the root appear to suppress the production of the main mediators involved in inflammation (e.g. COX-2, TNF-α, interleukins) by inhibiting the transcription factor NF-kB, which is involved in immune and inflammatory processes.
